Invest in layers: dressing the bump in autumn

As we transition out of summer, dressing a bump and still feeling put together can seem more overwhelming as we head into the cooler months.

Layers multiply, your regular wardrobe options shrink by the week, and what worked in July doesn’t always translate to October.

The good news: a handful of clever additions can carry you through the whole season without a full maternity wardrobe overhaul.

Here are six pieces worth adding to your rotation this autumn.

1. Tailored trousers

We’re starting strong with a pair of wide-leg grey suit trousers. Once these are in your pregnancy wardrobe, the styling options are endless.

These under-bump trousers from H&M are a great place to start. All the stretch sits at the back, keeping the front of the trouser sleek, so you have the option to show a little bump with a more fitted, stretchy top layered on top.

Style them with an oversized white long-sleeve tee from Arket, ballet flats and an oversized bag for an easy, pulled-together look.

Swapping jeans for tailored trousers is one of the fastest ways to make any outfit feel more polished.

2. Mid-length skirt

If you invested in one of these for summer, adapting it from beach to office is an easy win.

Jessie Bush nails this with a slouchy knit – a barely-buttoned poplin shirt or a fitted long-sleeve top both work just as well.

Try this lace-combined midi skirt from Zara or one of these two options from H&M…

3. Jeans and a nice top

The millennial holy grail still has a place in pregnancy.

Look for a fun statement top to wear with your trusty maternity jeans for an easy day-to-night switch – heels optional.

Try this flowing asymmetric top from Zara or this piece from H&M.

4. Satin trousers

Luxe fabrics do the heavy lifting when it comes to elevating an outfit, plus a drawstring waist works well under the bump.

These satin drawstring wide-leg trousers from H&M will work just as well beyond pregnancy, too.

For evening, pair them with satin slip-on slippers and a silk flowing blouse.

5. Sheer tops

Hear me out. When showing lots of skin isn’t top of your agenda, sheer fabric gives the illusion of an “eveningy” outfit without having to do too much. Wear over a black crop top or your favourite black tank.

Options to try: the Sheer Modal Long Sleeve Boatneck Top in Onyx from Skims, this sheer twist-front long-sleeve top from Helmut Lang, or the Sian Black Organza Drop Waist Top, Sian Black Organza Tee both from Dissh and this chocolate option from Arket.

6. Maximise your jewellery

Chunky, statement jewellery elevates a basic outfit when effort isn’t on the agenda.

Layering bangles is timelessly chic and instantly upgrades an outfit – shout out to these elasticated bracelets from Zara, which will actually still fit as your fingers and wrists swell later in pregnancy (praise be).

Other pieces worth adding: this Mango necklace, these pearl statement stud earrings from Missoma, and this long pebble bead necklace from M&S.
