The maternity styling trick influencers can’t stop wearing

Scarves tied around the waist have been one of the standout accessory trends of 2026. Kendall Jenner and a run of “It girls” have been knotting long, fringed silk scarves around coats, trousers and jeans instead of reaching for a belt.

Pregnant influencers, including Jess Hunt, have taken the same idea and adapted it for the bump: tying a fringe silk scarf just underneath it, so it sits like a soft sash rather than a belt.

Here’s why it’s fast becoming an essential maternity-dressing accessory.

The trend

Instead of hiding the bump under layers, the scarf draws a line right under it – cinching gently at the point where the belly meets the hips. The fringe adds movement and texture, and because it’s tied rather than fitted, it works at every stage of pregnancy without needing to size up.

It’s being spotted over:

  • Simple bump-hugging dresses and t-shirts
  • Oversized shirts left open at the front
  • Knitwear and roll necks, for a cooler-weather version of the look

Why it works on a bump

No pressure on the belly

Unlike a structured belt, a soft silk scarf ties as loosely or snugly as feels comfortable, and it’s easy to loosen as the day goes on.

Instant definition

It gives shape to looser silhouettes, which can otherwise swamp a smaller bump or feel shapeless on a larger one.

Elevates basics

A plain dress or tee goes from “loungewear” to “outfit” with one accessory – no shopping for new maternity pieces required.

Texture and movement

The fringe catches the light and moves as you walk, adding interest to otherwise simple maternity fabrics like jersey and cotton.

How to tie it

  • Drape the scarf around your back, just below the widest point of the bump.
  • Cross the ends at the front and knot once, loosely – it’s not meant to be tight
  • Let the fringe hang, or tie a second knot for a more polished, bow-like finish.
  • Adjust the position slightly higher or lower depending on your trimester and what feels comfortable.
